An Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, masonry company is facing some steep citations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration after a recent investigation. According to a news release by OSHA, inspectors investigated McGee Plastering & Stucco, Inc., after receiving a complaint alleging imminent danger. The company faces 10 safety violations for exposing workers to repeated fall hazards. The violations include five repeat violations and include $85,800 in proposed penalties.

First cited by OSHA in 2010 and 2011, the repeat violations carry the costliest penalties. The McGee Plastering & Stucco company faces $77,000 in penalties for the following repeat violations:

• Lack of fall protection
• Inadequate planking on work levels
• Lack of proper access to work levels
• No restrains or bracing
• Lack of training for those working on and around scaffolding

Prior to this recent inspection, the company was placed on OSHA’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program as a result heightened risks to workers’ health, committing willful, repeat or failure-to-abate violations. When employers are placed on this program, OSHA may inspect any facilities owned and operated by the employer if it has reasonable grounds to believe that there are similar violations to those that had put them in the program in the first place.

Domenick Salvatore, director of OSHA’s Philadelphia area office considers fall hazards to be among the most dangerous and deadly hazards in the workplace. “McGee Plastering & Stucco continues to take unnecessary chances by not ensuring proper safeguards to protect workers from fall hazards,” he said in a release statement. He went on to mention that fall hazards “should not be treated lightly by employers.”

The Upper Darby company faces an additional $8,800 in penalties for five serious violations that, according to OSHA, could lead to a substantial probability in death or serious physical harm. OSHA issues hefty citations and penalties when the employer knew about the hazards or should have known about the hazards.
