Workers’ Comp Fund in Pennsylvania Faces $6.5 Million Reduction

In a recent proposed outline for the 2013-2014 budget, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett sought to cut funding to the state’s Workers’ Compensation Administration Fund by $6.5 million.
The budget cut was presented to the state legislature on February 5, with very little supporting details as to how the budget cuts will affect the state’s Workers’ Compensation Administration. The Governor did state in a press release that he plans to “(streamline) the workers’ compensation system by improving care for injured workers and reducing medical costs for employers.” It is the hope that workers will continue to receive the care and support they need for medical bills and lost wages due to an on-the-job injury in Pennsylvania.
Also included in the budget outline were a spending reduction of nearly $77 million for occupational disease-related benefit payments and an increase of $3 million in general workers’ compensation payments. The administration hopes to unveil more information on programs and the affects these cuts (and increases) will have on employers and injured employees. While the state may cut funding to these benefit programs, employers still shoulder the burden of creating a safe work environment and will continue to strive towards creating safer work environments for all employees.
