A workers’ compensation attorney at Mednick, Mezyk & Kredo recently heard of an accident in Chester County that resulted in a construction worker being trapped in a trench for over two hours.

The accident occurred on Sunday, August 25^th as an excavation crew was working at the Coatesville VA medical Center in Caln Township. According to reports, a contractor was working on some pipes for an emergency generator project around 8 a.m. when mounds of dirt began to slide down into the trench. Hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Pomorski stated that though the worker was trapped and buried up to his neck, he remained conscious and did not seem to have any serious injuries.

Working for over two hours, a Chester County rescue task force of multiple fire departments and medical workers worked to free the worker, who was conscious upon his rescue. According to a news release, this was the first response by the task force. The statement goes on to state that “these types of incidents are low frequency/high risk calls. We gained valuable, real-life experience that will help us on the next incident.”

Pomorski confirmed that the worker was taken to Paoli Memorial Hospital for treatment. The cause of the accident and extent of the worker’s injuries are not known at this time, however, it is hopeful that the worker would be okay. The worksite has been active for several weeks as the team worked to increase the medical center’s power capacity during power failures with emergency generators.
