Who’s Most at Risk for Work-Related Injuries?
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
When it comes to work-related injuries and illnesses in Pennsylvania, one age group is more likely to be hurt and miss several days of work than any other. Based on 2011 data, workers aged 45-54 accounted for 26 percent of total injuries resulting in missed days of work. Let’s take a look at the data to understand what the risks are for this age group.
Industry Plays a Role
Among industries, workers aged 45-54 experienced the most injuries in the service sector, specifically the trade, transportation and utilities professions. These industries often are associated with high risk, such as working with hazardous machinery, driving and road risks, as well as work from heights and with utilities such as water, electric and chemicals that can be dangerous if improperly handled. Workers in this age group may take longer to heal from accidents in these industries due to age and other health factors.
Time for Healing
Workers in this age group take the second longest amount of time to heal from workplace injuries and illnesses. On average, individuals in this age group will miss approximately 11 days of work from a work-related injury or illness, the third highest of the eight documented age groups. As workers age, they need more time to rehabilitate and recuperate. This age group is really where you first start to see the increase in time needed to recuperate from a work-related injury or illness.
