Three workers have been hospitalized after a late-night explosion in a local steel mill.
The Pennsylvania workplace accident occurred on Thursday, May 23 at about 10:00 p.m. at the ArcelorMittal Steel Plant on South 1st Avenue in Coatesville, about 40 miles west of Philadelphia. When Chester County emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found that a furnace containing molten steel had exploded.
According to The Southern Chester County Weeklies website, water had leaked into D Furnace, a 3,000-degree, electric arc furnace used to melt steel. The water caused the explosion.
Three workers were injured in the accident. All three suffered serious burns. Two men were in critical condition and were taken to the Crozier-Chester Burn Center. The third man was taken to Brandywine Hospital.
The identities of the workers have not been released.

ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steel company. The company has not yet released a statement about the accident but has said that it is looking into the incident and has notified the proper authorities.
The accident is still under investigation as ArcelorMittal investigators and union representatives try to piece together exactly what happened. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has also been notified and will send investigators to the scene.
