Philadelphia Construction Worker Injured in Fall

JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS

A Philadelphia construction worker is being treated for injuries after falling from a cherry-picker crane.

The south Philadelphia construction site accident happened just after 11 a.m. on Monday, June 24. The 27-year-old worker was doing demolition work at a Navy Yard warehouse at 4921 S. 16th Street when a cherry picker malfunctioned and threw the worker into the air. The man fell more than 35 feet before landing at the foot of the crane.

A fire department spokesman said that the unidentified construction worker suffered no obvious injuries, but the man complained of pain. He was taken to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in stable condition.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the machine to malfunction.

Falls are among the most common injuries at Philadelphia construction sites. On June 20, a carpenter working at a Center City construction site suffered critical injuries after falling more than 30 feet.  The 54-year-old man was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital for treatment.

These accidents are not unusual. According to the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), falls are the leading cause of construction site fatalities and account for one out of every three construction-related deaths.

Falls that are not fatal often result in permanent disability. Falls at Philadelphia construction sites can cause broken or crushed bones, amputations, nerve damage, paralysis, and traumatic brain injury. Contractors and employers have a duty to prevent accidents by providing a safe workplace and adequate training. Employers that violate OSHA regulations may be held accountable through a Pennsylvania workplace injury lawsuit.
