Pennsylvania Workplace Deaths Drops 16 Percent
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
There are many professions in which employees incur injuries or death. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Pennsylvania workplace fatalities decreased 16 percent from 2010 to 2011.
The number of workers killed on the job in Pennsylvania in 2010 totaled 221, whereas 186 workers sustained fatal work-related injuries in 2011. The decrease Pennsylvania experienced in fatal workplace accidents is similar to the nation, as the total work-related deaths decreased 1.7 percent from 4,690 in 2010 to 4,609 in 2011.
Kara Markley, an economist at the BLS Philadelphia office, indicated that fatal workplace accidents in Pennsylvania have been increasing over the past several years, so the decrease in 2011 is a “step in the right direction.”
The 2011 fatal workplace accidents in Pennsylvania occurred from:
- Transportation – 69 people died in transportation events while working.
- Slip and Falls – 34 people were killed in work-related slips and falls.
- Contact with objects – 32 people were fatally struck by objects and equipment.
The transportation sector had the most job fatalities, 34, followed by the construction industry at 30 deaths. Over 50 people who died in 2011 suffered fatal workplace injuries in the Philadelphia area. Furthermore, the data show that the majority of people killed—nearly 90 percent—were men between the ages of 25 to 54.
