A new automated system in Pennsylvania seeks to create a cross-department system to help increase efficiencies for injured individuals, employers and insurance providers. The system seeks to help those injured in workplace accidents in Pennsylvania by providing access to an integrated system; combining efforts of the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, the Workers’ Compensation Office of Adjudication and the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board to form the Workers’ Compensation Automation and Integration System (WCAIS).

The WCAIS system is the first of its kind in the United States, seeking to automate and simplify the workers’ compensation process for individuals throughout the state. By merging these departments and programs, injured individuals have access to all aspects of their claim in one place. From claims to disputes and appeal information, the system is available 24/7 to help move claims along quicker and more efficiently.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry hopes that this system will help speed up resolution times through improved record keeping and increased data transparency. As part of the WCAIS system, a new Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) will be introduced, allowing injured individuals to fill out claim-related forms online.

According to the Department of Labor & Industry Secretary, Julia Hearthway, the system is more agile and customer-friendly, allowing injured individuals and employers alike to efficiently navigate claims.
