New Rule by OSHA to Reduce Workplace Risk in Philadelphia

JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS

Silica exposure is a serious workplace risk in Pennsylvania. An estimated 2.2 million workers across the United States are exposed to silica, a toxic mineral that can result in a deadly lung disease, silicosis, as well as lung cancer and other ailments. Silica is present largely in the construction industry when tiny silica particles are distributed from activities such as sandblasting, concrete-cutting and fracking, a form of oil and gas drilling also known as hydraulic fracturing.

With the dangers present in terms of silica exposure, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) felt it was time to further control worker exposures to silica, in addition to ensuring that employers detail the dangers of prolonged exposure. According to OSHA chief David Michaels, the proposed rule could help to save the lives of nearly 700 people each year and outright prevent 1,600 new cases of silicosis each year.

Michaels pointed out in a recent conference call that the rule will likely take “many months” to become final, but for workers exposed to the dangers of silica ingestion, this is a step in the right direction.

Estimated incurred costs by employers is estimated at around $1,250 per year, mostly in educational costs and updating current working techniques. For smaller businesses with fewer than 20 people, the costs are dramatically reduced. The overall benefit for businesses that comply will be reduced costs for workers’ compensation benefits and death benefits to surviving family members.

The risks in the Pennsylvania workplace can range from minor to grave. It is important to understand your rights if you are injured on the job or contract an illness from exposure to toxins while in the workplace. The team at Mednick, Mezyk and Kredo are here to help you every step of the way. Call our experienced workers’ compensation benefits attorneys at 888-807-WORK (9675) today for a free consultation.
