New Driving Program Helps Pennsylvania Teens Become Safe Drivers
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
Driving a motor vehicle is a responsibility that can have grave consequences with limited experience or careless behavior. When behind the wheel, teens’ lack of experience and careless behavior can sometimes be a deadly combination. Over the past five years, Pennsylvania auto accidents involving teens killed 1,279 people.
The inexperience and immaturity of young drivers has necessitated a system where young drivers can learn and gain experience behind the wheel while limiting the consequences of driving on their own. The Graduated Driver License (GDL) program varies from state to state. The program in Pennsylvania allows teenagers to earn the following:
- Learner’s permit – At age 16, a teenager can earn this permit after passing a written exam to drive by passing a written exam. Also, at least six months of driving exposure with a minimum of 65 hours of supervised driving time (with 10 hours of this time being nighttime driving) is required.
- Intermediate driver’s license – after passing another driving test, an intermediate license can be obtained. The main restriction for this license is no driving between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- Full driver’s license – After completing a drivers’ education course, at age 17 a teenager can obtain a full driver’s license. If the teenager does not complete an accredited drivers’ education course, he will have to wait until age 18 to obtain full licensure.
The restrictions that Graduated Driver License (GDL) programs put on teens may seem a burden to teens and a blessing to parents, but is an effort to save the lives of thousands of drivers in Pennsylvania and around the country.
