Malvern Man Killed in Chester County Pedestrian Accident on Route 23

A fatal pedestrian accident in Chester County took place Saturday, January 12, 2013, on Route 23 near Route 724. This tragic accident occurred around 5:45 p.m. in the 400 block of Schuylkill Road in East Pikeland Township.
According to the Daily Local News, the pedestrian was not using a marked crosswalk to cross the street when he was hit by a vehicle. He was struck on the westbound side of Route 23 near Meadow Lane. Upon impact, he was thrown into the air. The East Pikeland Police, Kimberton Fire Department, and the Chester County Accident Reconstruction Team arrived on scene to render aid.
The injured pedestrian was transported by West End Ambulance company to Phoenixville Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as 52-year-old Joel Mattson, of Malvern.
The driver of the van who hit and killed Mr. Mattson was not injured in this crash, and he has not been charged in connection with this fatal accident. After hitting the pedestrian, police indicated that the driver did stop to help him and call the police.
A portion of Route 23 was shut down in both directions for several hours following this accident for investigation. However, police are still investigating this deadly crash and are asking people with any information to call East Pikeland Township Officer Jerry Ferriola at 610-935-0606.
