Senior Citizens: Ways to Prevent Slip and Fall Accidents
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
Anyone at any age can suffer an injury stemming from a slip and fall accident, but older members of the population are statistically more likely to have an accident like this. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are the leading cause of injury death among adults aged 65 and older. Falls are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.
As we get older, we tend not to be quite as steady on our feet and accidents can happen. It’s important to take preventative steps to avoid slips and falls, even when someone else may be responsible for negligence in a certain situation. The following tips can be helpful in reducing the incidence of fall accidents:
- Get your eyes checked regularly. Paying a visit to your optometrist once a year will ensure that you are wearing eyeglasses with the correct prescription and that any issues that may impact your eyesight are addressed.
- Exercise. Older adults may find it increasingly more difficult to participate in physical activities, but regular exercise will keep your body stronger for longer. Try to focus on forms of exercise that improve balance and strength. These will help you keep your balance if you trip, and—if you do fall—your strength training may help you weather the impact.
- Review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist so that you understand possible side effects. Be extra aware if they tell you that one or more of your prescriptions cause drowsiness or dizziness.
- Try to make your home safer. Your body and health change as you get older. There is no shame in making some modifications to your home to protect your wellbeing. Make sure your home is very well lit. Add grab bars where you may find them necessary: common places include near the bathtub, toilet and stairs.
Remember, it is very important to seek medical attention if you do end up slipping and falling. Some injuries are not immediately apparent and waiting too long for treatment can make them even worse.
