Returning to Work After a Workplace Injury – Are You Prepared?
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
After a workplace injury, a lot of thoughts can reel through your mind – how will I pay my bills, how will I handle the medical treatments and how will my family manage without my income. After a time, it’s easy to see how many injured Pennsylvanians look forward to returning to work after an accident.
As workplace injury attorneys in Philadelphia, we see a wide variety of injuries and illnesses that occur in the workplace. We understand the passion and drive our clients have as employees, which is why we want to help you understand what to expect as you attempt to return to work. Knowledge of what to expect can ease your transition back into the workplace and make it a far easier process on you and your employer.
Transitional Work
This type of duty allows an injured employee to work in a modified or alternate position. This duty may be similar or quite different than the duties an employee may be used to. However, it allows for a period of time where the employee can adjust to returning to work as well as learning the physical limits with which they are comfortable.
If Your Employer Cannot Provide Transitional Work
If an injured employee is released to work in a limited capacity by his doctor, but the employer does not have transitional work, then workers’ compensation benefits will pay the employee until transitional work can be found. If an employer still cannot find transitional work after a period of time, a vocational rehabilitation specialist may be assigned to your case to help you transition into another position that suits your capabilities and career goals.
Ongoing Treatment
While an injured individual may be released by their doctor for “light duty” or transitional work, that does not mean that medical payments will cease. As long as an injured individual is receiving treatment by their physician for symptoms directly related to their workplace injury or illness, then workers’ compensation benefits will continue to pay for these incurred medical expenses.
There are, of course, times where you are simply unable to work and unable to return to work. Thankfully there are some long-term programs such as Social Security Disability and workers’ compensation benefits that can help you financially.
