Preparing Your Car and Yourself for Driving in Harsh Winter Conditions
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
When the temperature drops, the risks on the roads increase. With dangerous ice and snow, the threat of car accidents in the Philadelphia area during the winter months can leave unprepared individuals hurt, stranded and potentially in serious peril. Thankfully, there are several ways that individuals can prepare for driving in the harsh winter elements.
Prepare Your Vehicle and Yourself
During the winter months, it is even more important to ensure your vehicle is in proper working condition. This is the time of year many mechanics suggest “winterizing” your car. This procedure can ensure that belts, electronics, gas economy, tires, wipers, etc., all work properly and will work properly in the snow. It is also important to prepare yourself for driving in winter conditions. If you are uncomfortable with driving in snow, sleet or freezing rain, don’t risk going out. However, if you get stuck in bad weather while you are out, go slow and stay focused or find a place to stop until the weather has passed.
Focus on Safety When Behind the Wheel
When winter weather hits, we’re not always lucky enough to be in the comfort of our homes. Safety experts recommend some of the following to stay safe when driving in harsh winter weather:
- Clear all snow from your windshield wipers and lights.
- Give extra space between you and the car in front of you, to allow for extra stopping time to avoid a rear-end collision.
- Take extra caution on exit ramps as they typically receive less de-icing material than the main highways.
- Don’t think that you are invincible in an all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle. The grip may help your vehicle go quicker, however, it doesn’t not help you stop quicker.
- Scan the road ahead for accidents, other cars and potential hazards.
- Keep your distance from plows and snow treatment vehicles. It is also very important not to pass these vehicles on the right as they may need to enter the lane unexpectedly.
- Most importantly, slow down and wear your seat belts.
Winter Car Supplies
Winter conditions cannot only cause car accidents, but they can also result in individuals being stranded. From dead batteries to accidents on isolated Pennsylvania roads, the following supplies could help save your life during the winter months. Be sure to stock your vehicle with the following:
- At least two blankets
- Small travel shovel
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Extra clothing—in case you need to leave your vehicle to get help
- Sand or kitty litter—to help give your tires traction in slick conditions
- Extra windshield wiper fluid
- Bottled water and high-calorie, non-perishable food, such as nuts, protein bars, and candy
