Prepare in Advance for a Potential Pennsylvania Car Accident This Winter
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
During the winter months, uncertain weather conditions make driving safety of utmost importance. With around eight million Pennsylvania drivers on the road, tragedy could come in the blink of an eye.
Whether sliding off the road and getting stuck in a snow bank, getting into a Philadelphia auto accident with one or more cars, or running out of gas on a dark Pennsylvania road, it’s important to be prepared and stay calm. If you have passengers in your car, especially children, this can be rather difficult. Here are a few practical tips to help you be prepared when you don’t know what else to do, and some creative tips that can help making a car emergency kit a family project the whole family can get involved in.
- Pack warm gloves and blankets. Let each person of your family pick out a pair of gloves or blanket that can be theirs in the event of an emergency. Check out a local dollar store for inexpensive items as a “just in case.”
- Have a supply of non–perishable food and water. Go shopping as a family, and have each member pick out items that they would want to pack and eat. Let this be a learning opportunity for everybody!
- Include a first aid kit: These are available rather inexpensively at many stores, or you can make one yourself and include character-themed bandages and other kid-friendly things to help “lighten the mood.”
- Have flashlights available. Make sure to pack extra batteries. Make a game list of “shadow puppet” creations you can do as a family to pass the time if needed, too!
- Pack creative travel games or activities. Waiting for a tow truck can be really boring, and draw unneeded attention to an already stressful situation. Fun activities can help keep the mind busy and the attitude positive!
- Make a tool kit. Have a tool kit easily available in your vehicle. Include jumper cables, sand (to give your car traction), a small shovel, an ice scraper, and a cell phone charger. Again, make this a family project and let it be a learning opportunity about the importance of preparing for emergencies.
- Car information booklet. Create a booklet that includes all of your vehicle’s identification information. Make the booklet easily identifiable so you can quickly locate it when talking with emergency workers.
Nobody wants to get stuck in an auto accident in the middle of winter. Pennsylvania winter weather—blustering winds, black ice, blinding snow, and falling sleet—put added stress on drivers. Remember that even the best drivers can still be involved in a motor vehicle accident on Pennsylvania’s roads. If this happens to you, be sure to be prepared, stay calm, and try to put a little fun into your situation!
If you have experienced a winter traffic accident in Pennsylvania caused by the negligence of another person, you may be eligible for compensation for your medical care, lost income, property damage, and other losses.
