Helpful Workers’ Compensation Terms in Pennsylvania

JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS

Filing a Pennsylvania workers’ compensation claim can sometimes seem like learning a new language. There are many nuances and specifics that are involved with the process that can be difficult to navigate on your own. Our experienced workers’ compensation attorneys have compiled a list of some common workers’ compensation terms to assist our clients and injured individuals in the Philadelphia area. Workers’ compensation can vary by jurisdiction; however, these terms are often widely relatable across states and regions.

  • Average Daily Wage (ADW): Sometimes used to determine wage benefits, this is a calculation that averages workers’ daily earnings to help determine benefits. Similarly, Average Weekly Wage (AWW) is the same calculation using workers’ weekly earnings.
  • Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE): Tests that help to determine capability to work and participate in daily living and leisure activities.
  • Independent Medical Examination (IME): Objective examination of the injured employee by a physician. The physician is most often referred by an employer or the insurance company.
  • Permanent Partial or Total Disability: Two types of benefits that can be paid out to an injured worker. They can either be for an individual who has sustained a permanent, but not complete, disability (partial); or permanently and totally disabled (total).
  • Temporary Disability: A set of benefits that can be awarded to individual employees who may or may not be able to work over a short period of time. Long-term disability benefits are also available through Social Security Disability benefits.
