Avoid a Dog Bite in Philadelphia—and Keep Your Kids Safe

JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS

Children and dogs are a tricky combination for a few reasons.

Some kids are just plain afraid of dogs and run away screaming, unknowingly provoking the dog to chase them. Some kids are the opposite and want to play with every dog they see; a few of these dogs may be excited to see the child as well, but other dogs might be upset when kids bother them.

You may not always be with your children when they encounter a dog they don’t know, so it’s important to arm them with the knowledge they need to stay safe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is committed to preventing dog bite injuries and deaths, so they have released a list of safety tips you should review with your children:

  • Do not approach an unfamiliar dog on your own.
  • If a dog scares you, do not run and scream. The dog might become aggressive or chase you.
  • If a dog you don’t know comes up to you, stay completely still. Some parents say, “Be still like a tree.”
  • If a dog jumps on you and knocks you over, don’t flail around and scream. Curl up into a ball and be totally still. Another thing parents say is, “Be still like a log.”
  • Do not play with a dog unless there is an adult there to supervise.
  • If you see a stray dog or a dog that is acting strange, tell an adult immediately.
  • Try not to make direct eye contact with a dog. Some dogs may think you are threatening them.
  • Don’t bother a dog if it is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. Even dogs that are normally nice can turn on you if you sneak up and surprise them while they’re busy.
  • If you want to pet a dog, let it see you and sniff you first so they can get used to you.
  • If a dog bites you, tell an adult right away.

Most dogs are wonderful pets, but children can sometimes overwhelm or frighten them and the dog ends up responding in a less than favorable way.
