Icy Conditions Cause SUV to Plummet 65 Feet Off Pennsylvania Turnpike

Police are calling the survival of a 41-year-old Reading woman a miracle after her SUV plummeted 65 feet. The accident occurred when the driver lost control on ice and snow on the eastbound side of I-76 just outside of Philadelphia early on February 2nd.
According to State Trooper Kevin Rathman, snow squalls and icy conditions caused the driver of a 2004 Ford Explorer to fishtail and hit the concrete median in the center of the highway. This impact “caused the vehicle to overturn and slide toward the bridge,” Rathman detailed. “It then went over the bridge and fell approximately 65 feet straight down.”
Incredibly, though the SUV dropped 65 feet, the vehicle landed on its wheels on the Conway Railroad tracks. The Reading, Pennsylvania, driver was conscious and alert when police and emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the accident.
Though the SUV was badly damaged and the driver was transported to Paoli Memorial Hospital for treatment, police say the driver is incredibly lucky to be alive. This particular overpass has seen other accidents in this area and police advise drivers to take caution both in this area and others during dangerous winter conditions.
“With the cold air in place, it made it very slippery and icy,” Rathman said. The driver “was alert, alive and other than that, (sustained) moderate injuries. It’s a lucky miracle.”
The auto accident attorneys at Mednick, Mezyk & Kredo wish a speedy recovery to the injured driver and advise you all to stay safe during dangerous winter weather in Philadelphia.
