Hot Weather Still a Threat for Workplace Heat Illness in Pennsylvania

JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS

Though summer may be drawing to a close, those infamous “dog days” are upon us. The high heat and humidity can take its toll on not only the young and the elderly, but individuals who must work outside. As Philadelphia workers’ compensation attorneys, we felt it important to share some of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) helpful tips for outdoor workers to protect against potentially dangerous heat-related illnesses and injuries.

Hydration and Sun ProtectionOne of the most important safeguards against heat-related illness is drinking plenty of water. OSHA suggests that workers have plenty of fresh, cool drinking water available as well as planned breaks in the shade. Staying out of the sun when its UV rays are strongest will also help lessen the stress on your body. When you must be in the sun, ensure you plan for breaks as well as adequately protect your skin (even under clothing) with sunscreen.

Training for Emergencies – All employees should have an understanding of the symptoms of heat related illnesses well as how to react, OSHA says. In the event someone displays signs of a heat related illness, it is best to notify emergency personnel immediately, making sure to note how to get to their job site quickly. Employees should be trained on the basics of first aid as well in order to help the ailing individual until trained medical professionals arrive. If you currently work outdoors, but do not have first aid training for heat-related illness, ask your supervisor if someone on your team does before it is too late.

Heat-related illness can be very dangerous for people of all ages. We hope the rest of your summer is safe and enjoyable. We do realize that even the most careful individuals experience accidents on the job. If you experience an on-the-job injury in Philadelphia, call us today 888-807-WORK (9675) for a free consultation.
