Five Steps to Eye Safety in the Workplace
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 2000 workers in the United States sustain a job-related eye injury each day. With nearly 5% of these injuries resulting in lost time from work, it’s important to focus on how to prevent these accidents from happening in the first place. Below we share five steps to eye safety in the workplace.
- Eliminate Risks – Ensure safety guards and safety features are in place for machinery, employees understand how to properly utilize tools, minimize flying debris and ensure that bystanders do not enter the hazardous area.
- Evaluate Safety Hazards – Review the primary hazards in the workplace including those posed by nearby workers, large machinery and falling or shifting debris.
- Wear Proper Protection – Select the appropriate eye protection for the hazard, that it is in good condition and that it properly fits and will stay in place while in use.
- Use Best Practices – When removing debris and dust from hardhats, hair, forehead or other location, keep protective eyewear in place. Do not rub eyes with dirty hands or clothing and clean eyewear regularly.
- First Aid – Keep a first aid kit on-hand that is designed to treat first aid needs. Workplaces that may be at risk for eye injuries should have an eye wash station or sterile solution available to wash out the eye in event that debris or chemicals go into the eyes.
Eye safety in the workplace is crucial and often top of mind for managers in at-risk environments, however, accidents still occur quite often.
