First Responders Deadline to Apply for September 11th Victims Fund is October 3rd, 2013
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
Our federal government has a 9/11 victim compensation fund set up for those workers who have became ill after working at ground zero (and other crash sites including the site in PA) and others whose sicknesses can be tied to the site. In 2011, Congress passed the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act whereby they set up the fund and provided monies to help workers, residents and others affected by the disaster and its aftermath. The Zadroga Act provides that individuals are eligible if they were present at the September 11th crash sites at the time of the crashes or between September 11, 2001 and May 30, 2002, and suffered physical harm as a direct result of the crashes or debris removal.
The deadline to apply is Oct. 3, 2013. However, a person can apply for two years from the time a person learns that a physical injury or sickness resulted from exposure to ground zero. Congress set up the program to run for six years. Click here for information on how to file your claim.
What injuries are covered by the fund? In order to have a compensable injury, the applicant is required to show evidence that he or she spent time at a crash site during the applicable time period and evidence of their diagnosis. The most common illnesses among people exposed to the site are lung disease and chronic sinusitis. Cancer was originally excluded from those injuries compensable by the Fund. However, certain forms of cancer are now being covered.
