Why was I denied Social Security benefits?

JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS

It’s hard to say without seeing your initial application for Social Security Disability Insurance, but there are some common reasons why you may have been denied. Keep in mind the fact that many, many people get denied SSDI benefits after the first time they apply; filing an appeal to that decision is the key to a possible resolution.

There are certain qualifying situations that the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is looking for:

  • You must have held a recent job before you became disabled, and that job must have been covered by Social Security. You earn work credits based on your total yearly wages and can get up to four each year. The amount requirements for credits change from year to year, so be sure to consult a professional.
  • You have to be considered “disabled” under the SSA’s definition. That means your disability must be expected to last at least one year or eventually result in death. You also can’t be able to do any kind of work because of your condition.
  • The SSA has a list of medical conditions that are so severe they automatically mean you are disabled. If your condition is not on the list, they will have to decide if it’s equal in severity to something already on the list.

If you fail to get all of your information and full history in with your application in a reasonable amount of time, you may be denied. If the SSA doesn’t have every piece of the puzzle, they can’t make a valid judgment.

Many people know in their hearts that they should qualify for Social Security benefits, but some just don’t know how to provide enough information to build their case and stand up for themselves.
