The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency that seeks to limit and eliminate workplace accidents throughout the country. In conjunction with safety and health professionals around the country, they have outlined some specific steps that employers are required to take after workplace accidents.
First Aid Administration
Ideally, OSHA prefers that the injured individual seek medical treatment at a clinic, infirmary or hospital immediately after the accident. However, if an individual is injured and requires immediate response before emergency personnel can reach the injured individual, OSHA requires that adequate first aid supplies be readily available and that someone must be adequately trained to render first aid.
Recording Injuries and Illnesses
After injuries and illnesses are reported, employers must keep accurate and current records of these injuries. OSHA has specific recordkeeping requirements that may vary across industries, especially those that are more hazardous than others. For high-hazard industries, many companies are required to keep records of all injuries and illnesses sustained throughout the year and create an annual summary that is available for review by federal safety agencies and employees.
Catastrophic Injury Response
Catastrophic events occur when a person is killed on the job and/or three or more workers are hospitalized after a workplace accident. OSHA requires employers to report this accident to the agency within eight hours. All fatal heart attacks sustained on work grounds must also be reported to OSHA.
