We’re parents of an infant, a 6-year-old and a 10-year-old. How do we know they are in the right car seats?

JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS

Using the right car seat for your child can help prevent serious and potentially fatal injuries if you are involved in a Philadelphia car accident. With so many options on the market, it’s hard to understand which might be the right fit for your child. We consulted the government site www.safercar.gov to bring you helpful tips on ensuring that your child is in the right seat.

Birth to 12 months

Children in this age group should ride in rear-facing seats. Infant-only seats will only be able to be used in a rear-facing manner, but convertible and 3-in-1 seats will allow for use for a longer period of time.

1-3 Years

When possible, keep your child in a rear-facing seat until your child is over the height or weight maximums. Once they have out-grown that, you can switch to a forward-facing seat with a harness.

4-7 Years

This age group should ride in forward-facing car seats with harnesses until they have reached the height and weight maximums for the seat. Then they can move up to booster seat in the back of the vehicle only.

8-12 Years

You may keep your child in a booster seat until they can safely use a seat belt. The seat belt must be worn across the tops of their thighs, not their stomach and the shoulder belt should be worn across the chest and not rest on the face. Your child should remain in the back seat since it is the safest place for them.
