How do I prepare for an independent medical exam in my Pennsylvania workers’ compensation case?

JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS

Independent medical exams (IME) can be very intimidating for injured Pennsylvania workers. Since so much can ride on one brief examination by a doctor you do not know, it can have a big impact on your case. The following serve as some suggested tips to help you prepare for your IME from our Pennsylvania workers’ compensation attorneys:

  • Review your injuries, symptoms and medical issues before your examination. Gather a complete and accurate description of your medical history as related to your injury as well as any previous conditions that may have had an effect on your injury or illness. You do not need to detail any additional injuries or illnesses not related to your case.
  • Plan ahead and be sure to show up to your examination on time.
  • Survey your body starting at your head and working down your body. Inventory and document everything that the injury has affected. This will help you during your examination to substantiate your claim.
  • Think about how your injury occurred and what specifically injured, and any subsequent pain or injuries after the accident.
  • There is no need to exaggerate your injuries. It could severely deter your case if a doctor suspects you are exaggerating. Honestly explain how you feel and what your medical issues are. Likewise, if you are still in pain, or in pain during the exam, do not hesitate to say so to the physician.
  • Bring a notebook and pen to your examination and document your examination in your own words. This will be important for your attorney.

It is important to know you are not alone in this process. When you hire a Pennsylvania workers’ compensation attorney from Mednick, Mezyk & Kredo, we will help you prepare for every part of your examination. We’ll explain when to bring, and not to bring, medical documents like x-rays or other medical documents as well as what to say, when to say it and what can remain unsaid.

Your attorney has extensive experience preparing their clients for IMEs and will ensure that you will feel comfortable, confident and assured. For a free consultation, call us today at 888-807-WORK (9675).
