A recent breach of JPMorgan Chase’s records compromised the personal information of 465,000 users of prepaid cash cards, including about 26,000 Pennsylvanians who currently receive workers’ compensation benefits and unemployment benefits. The debit card program, which just recently switched its administrator to JPMorgan Chase earlier this year, pays out workers compensation benefits and unemployment benefits onto a prepaid card in lieu of monthly checks.

The Pennsylvania Treasury Department indicated that the breach affected cardholders who used the JPMorgan Chase UCard Center website between mid-July and mid-September. While JPMorgan currently does not have evidence that the information was used improperly, the Pennsylvania Treasury Department states that individuals should keep an eye on their accounts for the time being.

JPMorgan Chase plans to contact cardholders via letter if their information has been compromised. If, in the meantime, cardholders notice suspicious transactions they do not recognize, JPMorgan Chase asks that they call the phone number printed on the back of their card.

As an added measure, it is always a good idea to change your passwords and pin numbers on a regular basis – even for individuals who are not affected by this breach. While it may be tenuous to remember all your user names and passwords, it can go a long way to ensuring that hackers who may have your information currently may not be able to use it later.
