A construction worker is injured after a workplace accident on the campus of Temple University.
The Philadelphia construction site injury occurred on July 11 at about 1:00 p.m. The fifth floor of the new Science Education and Research Center currently under construction collapsed onto the fourth floor. The building is located at 12th Street and Polett Walk, near Cecil B. Moore Avenue.
Six workers were trapped in the eight-floor building. Students and campus workers described hearing a loud crumbling noise and calls for help.
The building was evacuated and bystanders were told to get out of the way while fire fighters rescued the trapped men. Rescue efforts took about one hour. The men were brought down using a working elevator on the other side of the building. One man suffered serious, but life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Temple University Hospital. He was listed in stable condition.
The building has been shut down until city investigators can determine the cause of the accident. Twelfth Street has been closed from Norris to Montgomery to prevent injuries to passers-by. The sidewalk in front of the building was also closed.
When complete, the 250,000 square foot building will be a $137 million facility containing lab space and advanced technology. It is scheduled for completion in June 2014.
