Company Downsizing Linked to Workplace Injuries
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
For many, the economic downturn has included a fair share of layoffs due to budget cuts and company closings. These layoffs and staff cuts can lead to an increased risk of workplace injury for the workers who remain.
Psychologist Tahira Probst monitored employees at two major poultry-processing plants that were undergoing organizational changes that affected job security. For six months, she surveyed workers and their adherence to safety standards as they underwent a series of layoffs and other job security stressors.
The two plants had differing methodologies of laying off workers, however, Probst and her colleagues discovered that employees who were concerned about job loss showed less commitment to safety compliance. As a result, these workers experienced more wrist, arm and hand injuries. Individuals who feared job loss the most often cut safety corners to meet production quotas in an attempt to be irreplaceable in the eyes of their managers.
As Probst’s information shows, the stress of meeting project deadlines and production quotas could lead to higher injury rate. By placing a higher price on safety compliance, individuals can focus more on how they work, rather than by how much they can produce while putting their safety at risk.
To our experienced workers’ compensation attorneys, this study makes perfect sense. Sadly, individuals who are looking to prove their worth often cut seemingly innocuous corners in order to be perceived as irreplaceable. While downsizing may not always be unavoidable, emphasis on employee safety has a place in every work environment.
