Common Fatal Work-Related Accidents in Pennsylvania
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
When many of us head to work, we often do not think that this could be the last time we will see our family. Unfortunately, each year approximately 4,600 people die while on the job in the United States. This data is compiled each year by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and reflects accidents that happened during 2011. The same study showed that in Pennsylvania 186 people were killed while on the job.
The study found that four major accident types caused these workplace fatalities. These accidents include (in order of highest occurrence):
- Transportation incidents (37% of 2011 fatalities)
- Slips, trips, and falls (18% of 2011 fatalities)
- Contact with objects or equipment (17% of 2011 fatalities)
- Violence and other injuries from other people, as well as animals (15% of 2011 fatalities)
The study’s information illustrated that the largest number of on the job fatalities in Pennsylvania were due to transportation incidents. Broken down further, the majority of those killed due to transportation incidents involved mostly drivers of large tractor trailers.
Slips, trips and falls were the second most common cause of death, accounting for approximately 17% of all work-related fatalities in Pennsylvania. Compared to the rest of the country in 2011, Pennsylvania saw a 3% higher fatality rate from slip, trip and fall accidents.
Contact with objects or equipment accounts for accidents such as collisions with hard objects and falling objects in places such as factories, construction sites and loading docks. Deaths from these types of accidents are nearly as common as deaths from slips, trips and falls and violence in the workplace.
Sadly, the lives of these individuals were taken too soon from accidents that likely could have been prevented.
