Are There Hidden Hazards in Pennsylvania Offices?
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
The Office of Compliance (OOC) is a federal government agency that manages safety in legislative areas such as the U.S Capitol. They have released a new safety and health checklist aimed at protecting the millions of Americans who work in office environments each day. Typically these office areas hardly seem to hold any major hazards that other “hands-on” jobs have; however, there are still hazards that could prove dangerous if ignored.
Our experienced Pennsylvania workers’ compensation legal team felt it important to share the OOC’s checklist to help reduce the risk of workplace hazards in Pennsylvania offices. The following are areas to check in your office to ensure you have a safe workplace:
- In the event of an emergency, do you know where to go? Review your office emergency action or evacuation plan. Know where to go in the event of a building evacuation.
- Be on the lookout for electrical wires, frayed cords and jumbles of electrical cords. Be sure that extension cords are not being used as permanent connections and surge protectors are plugged directly into the wall.
- Check electrical outlets to ensure there are no exposed wires. Also, in bathrooms and other wet areas, ensure the electrical outlets have ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) that stop the transfer of energy in an emergency.
- Ensure walkways are cleared of power cords, phone cables, wires, stacks of paper and other obstructions. In an emergency or power outage, these can be a tripping hazard.
- Ensure filing cabinet drawers are always closed when not in use and heavy items are stored at the bottom.
- Use overhead storage wisely. Ensure that storage shelving is properly mounted to the wall and objects are securely placed on shelving units.
