Annual Price Tag for Healthcare Workers’ Workplace Injuries: Billions
JENKINTOWN PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS
Healthcare workers around the United States put the needs of their patients ahead of their own on almost a daily occasion. While this news isn’t surprising, what may be is the higher rate of injury that this occupation endures. Each year, workplace injuries for healthcare workers cost billions of dollars and millions of dollars in lost wages.
The American Society of Safety Engineers recently shed light on this subject in their journal, Professional Safety. The data from 2011 illustrates that healthcare workers experienced on the job injuries that resulted in $13.1 billion in treatment and rehabilitation costs and $2 million for lost wages. The most common injuries among the 15.2 million injured on the job in 2011 were strains and sprains. Other frequent injuries include slips, trips and falls as well as violence and chemical exposure.
The study further shows some interesting trends when it comes to workplace injuries for hospital workers. Female employees with more than five years on the job and employees aged 45- to 54- years-old were more likely to experience a workplace injury. Interestingly enough, the most common time accidents happened on the job was on Tuesdays between 12:01 p.m. and 4 p.m.
